Here is a short article about a
dog sterilisation project in Kataragama in Sri Lanka that seems to be on the
road to success. It is mainly run by young professionals and university
students with the aims being to increase awareness about the benefits of
sterilisation and proper pet dog care plus help to control the street dog
population.
This article highlights the key
strategy behind this successful project as holding repeated sterilisation camps
in the same area rather than just a single visit. Although it might seem an
unnecessary duplication in effort, this tactic clearly allows for word of mouth
to enable much better coverage of the total dog population. Whether other
similar projects can follow this group’s example will come down to how thinly
available resources are spread but having such a good demonstration model may in
some small way help to gain the resource of greater participation.
