This article in the Sri Lankan
Sunday Times is mainly about rabies but also has other information I was
pleased to read as it clearly identifies the source of the dog problem.
The article states that 90% of
dog bites are from pet dogs, only 10% from strays, and that most strays have
had human owners at some stage. The conclusion is clear: dog owners are the
problem, so as they say, “It is vital to establish responsible ownership”.
Too often the endemic,
free-ranging village dogs of the world who are following the same unowned lifestyle
that they have been following for thousands of years are caught up in or
directly blamed for the problems created by irresponsible pet dog owners.
