Street Dogs Help Ward Off Evil

A news story about the ongoing garbage and stray dog management problems in Kashmir (here) contains an interesting snippet about the traditional beliefs of the residents. In spite of a recently tense relationship between the street dogs and people, Kashmiris are apparently traditionally dog-friendly and after a bad dream have the belief that they should then give food to street dogs. The older generation even still “keep a morsel of food for the dogs in the street to ward off evil.”
